IAP at Lucasfilm Animation Singapore

I was posted to Lucasfilm Animation Singapore for my Industrial Attachment Programme (IAP) after an interview held by the company. There, I was assigned to the IT department as desktop support. As a desktop support, I was required to man the IT helpline, process the back-up tapes weekly and manage the electronic equipment. I was also told by my desktop support colleagues to report problems or mistakes as they will need to correct it.

Manning the IT helpline meant that I would have to consult my colleagues if the caller reported something that was beyond my expertise. But most of the time, with experience, the problems reported could easily be solved.

Managing the electronic equipment consisted of cloning images onto new computers, setting up workstations for new staff and guests, solving computer related problems for colleagues, calibrating CRT monitors according to a schedule and keeping track of the different equipment by inputting their properties and location into an online asset database amongst other tasks. Of which, the last task was related to my IT Service Management specialization.

It was a real eye-opener working in an informal office environment. Many things intrigued me; like the data centre, the impressive specifications of the workstations when compared to home PCs and the calibration equipment. I also saw how a corporate asset database was like. The working environment was a relatively informal one, with my supervisor chatting with us interns at times and the staff being allowed to dress casually.

The staff was well bonded as we took part in activities during and after working hours. Even some head of departments took part in soccer games held almost every week.
