Interview @ SMU

I recently got shortlisted for an interview with SMU in the faculty of Accountancy. Somehow, it feels like a JOB INTERVIEW. While at the waiting room, it was very suffocating as everyone out there were all so nervous. It was an individual interview therefore making me feel like a pressure cooker that might explode any moment. I got interviewed by a Professor and a year 3 student. Questions were more centered on why I chose the course and how big an interest it is for me. I remember 1 question which made me think hard. "What legacy do you want to leave in a company that you're going to work for". I can't remember what i said but it's a good question for me to ponder about. So all in all, I'm keeping my fingers crossed hoping that I can get in! ALL THE BEST!

Roger after FYP

This is Roger here and I have just finished my FYP and presentation and it’s PARTY TIME!! Yeah, I have unofficially graduated from NYP.

Ok! Now I will now share some of my experience during FYP. I did my FYP in S.441 and I sat very near to the door and so whenever any visitor walked past our lab, I became one of the most popular “fish on exhibit”. Well you may ask why I call myself “fish on exhibit”. For those of you who didn’t know, the FYP labs are called “Fish Tank” and we FYP students are 'stuck' in it for 12 weeks to do our project.

In the beginning when I first came to the lab, I felt strange as it was the first time I use this lab. I also did not know any of the DTs but luckily a few of my friends were together with me. When I was given my FYP project, I was shocked as it was a topic which I did not studied or learned before in NYP. I was given a topic on Augmented Reality and it was sort of a R&D project. I wanted to give it up at first and request for a change of project as I thought I would not be able to take on this challenging project.

However, after going through the 12 weeks of FYP, I not only managed to finished my project on time, but also I learned a lot of different skills like C# Programming (looks like Java though), Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), and some 3D modeling skills (those in Interactive Media Specialisation would have learnt this!!). I personally think that FYP really let me learned a lot of ''out of class'' knowledge. However through my determination and discipline, I did my own research, borrowed lots of books and learnt from online tutorials. I am glad I got Augmented Reality as my FYP topic as it is a new and interesting and I learned a lot from it.

My lab mates were very supportive and friendly and we also helped each other to debug our project and in the process we became good friends and not forgetting the DTs who are very friendly and caring to us. They would always be happy to offer their help to us whenever we need it.

Last but not least, I would like to thank my supervisor, Mr. Anthony Szeto, for the help and guidance he has given me throughout the project. Thanks !

Reminiscences of FYP

After completing my FYP, I find it to be a very fruitful and meaningful experience though there are times where things don’t work out the way I wanted and when difficulties arise. Going to the canteen to have a drink and relax for a while is definitely recommended.

Seeking help and asking for opinions from friends and my supervisor make problems easier to solve rather than letting time pass by unknowingly.

I made quite a number of new friends in my project lab. We had lots of fun joking around and having nice chats. We would sometimes play sports like basketball to sweat out. Having fun and staying healthy at the same time. Life in FYP isn’t always about doing project all the time, it would be very boring to keep on doing the project continuously. There were times when we should take a break and times to be serious in our work.

During the mid-term assessment which occurs in around week 6 or 7, it is IMPORTANT to take down notes of feedback given by the assessor and then seek to implement them eventually.

The most stressful week in my opinion would be the presentation week in week 12. I actually lost a lot of sleep during this particular week mainly because I stressed myself thinking and worrying too much about my presentation.

Prior to the final presentation, there were 2 days of “open presentation” where any lecturers can assess our project. It would be good to take down all the comments and get prepared for similar questions that might be asked again during the final presentation.

Some of the feedback I received were pretty harsh or lenient depending on each individual lecturer. I actually find it shocking when lecturers I knew of from Year 1 and 2 giving me very harsh comments that I initially find it hard to take. But I know they are doing it for the purpose of preparing me for the final presentation. They are still the kind and caring lecturers that I knew of during the time when I was in Year 1 and 2.

All in all, FYP is different from the study semesters. It is a very valuable and enriching experience for one to gain much from.

My P6 Experience aka FYP

After 12 weeks of my industry attachment, I was back to school to do my final year project (FYP). Together with my team mate we were assigned under Mr. SeeToh, my project supervisor. Initially I was rather apprehensive about the whole project as I am rather weak in programming. However, my supervisor was very patient with me and he was always willing to help when we occurred any problem.

I really enjoyed my last 12 weeks in NYP as I learned many things from my supervisor and friends. Whenever I was in the dumps, my friends were my pillar of strength then . School would have been a drag without their support and motivation.

I guess I am really grateful for my friends and supervisor. I had never enjoyed programming until my FYP project .. haha
