National Crime Prevention Council Festive Season RoadShow 2010

On 6th November, our students and staffs went down to support the National Crime Prevention Council Festive Season RoadShow 2010 @ Plaza Singapura. DMIT final year students had helped to create informational and games applications using interactive gestures for the event. Then Minister for Information, Communications & the Arts, Mr. Lui Tuck Yew kick start the event. After the launch ceremony, he went around to view the exhibits and stop by our booth where our student, Deon explained the various applications to him.

OLT catches up with the students, staffs and event organizers involved on their thoughts after the event.

In view of the National Crime Prevention Council event, I feel that the various application designed by us are well received. People of all ages including Minister Lui, enjoyed our interactive application.

In this crime prevention event, we have received a lot of positive feedback from the public and even from Minister Lui Tuck Yew. He has praised NYP students for the work at the event. Other positive comments from the young people at the event were received too.

In support of the NCPC's roadshow a few of us went down on Saturday (06/11). We were very pleased that our games and information booth designed by us had received good feedback from the public and was a great hit with both the young and old.

2 NYP Scholars

We would like to congratulate both Colin and Jun Yao for being awarded the NYP scholarship. Both have definitely done well to deserve this scholarship. OLT catches up with Colin on his thoughts on being awarded the scholarship.

I would first like to say a big “Thank You” to the school - thank you for the caring lecturers and mentors, for the quality education and the good facilities. I’m extremely grateful to receive the NYP scholarship. Across the past 2 years, it’s been an amazing journey for me – actively participating in competitions and accomplishing some extent of success in some; starting up a club, excelling in studies and fostering meaningful friendships with my peers. I’m thankful for the scholarship as it will help me financially and better focus on achieving the goals and championing the ‘innovative’ spirit of NYP. Thank you NYP!

Changing Electives

Our little bird got wind that there is a discussion topic over at MIT@NYP for people wanting to swap elective/class. Check it out fast if you are in that category. Best advice going around for people not liking their assigned elective is to seek someone who wants to swap with them. :)

E-Learn Week & Common Test

Hello People, how is the study week been going for you from home ? We hope you are keeping yourself free from the bugs that are going around and mugging at home for next week common test instead :):):) In the meantime, we are sure lot of emails, msn and sms are flying around between you and your lecturers, hope you are not swarm with them and you do not swarm your lecturers as well .. haha.

Next week is common test week and if you are still not aware of the schedule, the schedule is in "myNYP Portal" as well as the iConnect website :)

By the way, go and get your Temperature Sticker 1st thing when you come into campus, else you will NOT be allowed to take your test.

New Email - Outlook.com

With the new email services @ outlook.com, our student emails have been changed to <YourAdmissionNumber>@mymail.nyp.edu.sg.

Basically, we are going to have better function & features than previously. It have a huge mailbox storage size of 10GB with maximum attachment size of 20MB per mail. Not only that, you can pick your own web browsers like IE, Firefox and Safari too.

Since our email have changed, websites which require our email to login will be impacted too. For example, "http://msdn70.e-academy.com/nanpol_seng" which provide us with the Microsoft software throughout the school semester.

So start trying out your new email account :)

Graduation 2009

OLT has heard some news that our graduation ceremony this year is going to fall on 29th May ... so approximately 3 more months to go before our final year students officially graduate.

Just to add on to the previous post, OLT found out that when MM Lee visited NYP, he visited 2 schools including ours. When he came to our Hall of Innovation, he inquired about 3 student projects. Guess what ... 2 of them were designed and developed by our VERY own MIT students. What does that say about us ? Fantastic, we suppose.

DMIT - An Engineering Course ??

Someone asked recently, "Is DMIT an engineering course ?". My answer would be, "Take a look at the modules/subjects we offered in the course and it would be crystal-clear." Our students take 2 electronics subjects in their entire 3 years of study because we know that with such knowledge, they would be better equipped to interact, interface and work together with other IT/Infocomm professionals. :)

Minister Mentor's Visit to NYP

Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew visited our school on 5^th January 2009 and I was privileged enough to present one of the many industrial projects that the school has completed over the years.

Although many people think that it is just a presentation, to be able to present and have a brief session of Q&A was almost surreal. I always see him on the television and read about him but never really gotten to know what was Mr. Lee like in person.

He is such a fatherly figure I must say. It felt as though I was talking to my grandfather when he asked me about my secondary school and my plans for the future. He showed much interest in what secondary school I was from and if it was far away from my home. He was also interested to know what I plan to do after graduation especially since I would be graduating soon. He wanted to know which university I plan to go and why. Mr. Lee was also interested in why I chose to enter the polytechnic instead of a Junior College.

To be able to see Mr. Lee so active really inspired me to live life to the fullest. He had such stature yet he was really humble and nice when he spoke to us.

The experience preparing for his visit was also out of this world. My supervisor was such a great support and I learned a lot from him. Throughout the week of preparation, I learnt things that I would never find in a textbook.

Chatting with MM Lee

MM Lee came to NYP few days ago, on the 5th January 2009 and visits the School of Engineering & School of Interactive & Digital Media. He also had a dialogue session with 10 students from various schools in NYP, to find out more about the students studying here.

Many people are rather interested in what MM Lee talked to the students about. I am one of the representative in this dialogue session, so I would be able to share with you guys about my experience.

First of all, I find that MM Lee is a very gentle and nice man. At first, I felt pretty stressful, especially at the start of the dialogue session when I was sitting right between him and Mr Chan Lee Mun, our Principal.

MM Lee started the session by posting questions to us, the situation is quite tensed up at first, in the sense that everyone (students) are so nervous & excited, the feeling is like as though you're talking to your idol, and much more than that! (Trust me, you'll be sooooo excited. If you're there, you will understand what I mean :D)

MM Lee is very friendly to us, he joke with us, he always has a gentle smile and that makes us feel more relax. Everyone (students) tend to be able to speak more naturally and freely, without being afraid of not being formal enough when we are answering our questions.

First of all, I'd like to say that in my opinion, I find that he asked us on rather personal questions, in a sense that he don't really ask us what is our course about or stuffs like that. Finally, it's my turn. I was very relaxed and natural at first, but the moment he talked to me, I became soooo nervous. My hands start to tremble, not because I am scared. It's because I am so excited that I could hardly control my hands. I normally see him on textbooks, computer screen, television and etc - I have never seen him in person, let alone talk to him.

"AM I DREAMING?" - The kind of unreal feeling comes to me ... Firstly, MM Lee asked me how could he pronounce my surname, "Kong". He pronounces it as "Koh", and "Korr"but I tell him that it is pronounced as King Kong's "Kong". I'm glad he laughed! Okay, that makes me a little bit less nervous. Then he asked me questions like the following:

- Do you intend to go for further studies?
- If you do, do you prefer local university or oversea university and why ?
- How do you plan to finance your studies in university?
- What does my parents work as, at where, and stuffs like that
- To add on to the previous point, MM also asked about things like how many siblings do I have, where are they studying at and stuffs like that.

IMPORTANT: All the above "questions" are what I roughly remembered.

Personally, I'm proud to be a NYP student and I'm proud to be a student studying the Diploma in Multimedia Infocomm & Technology.

Having to present to lecturers is like an experience of introducing your project to a client, explaining and answering their questions they have for my project.

A very good experience of being in a real working environment.

The presentation allows me to display and demo what i have done and learnt for the past 6 weeks.Having to present to different lecturers improves the flow of my presentation, it gives me a training ground to brush up my presentation skills as well.

MIT in 2ndLife

A few of our students has designed and created a MIT space within Second Life that represents the MIT virtual campus learning space. If you are into 2ndLife, drop by @ Moa 41,213,80 and learn more about the projects on display. MIT Bourne, our own avatar, will be on hand to welcome you !





The maze and ramp on the platform to the right of the building is currently being used for testing mixed reality applications. What's "Mixed Reality" ?! Well, think of it as being able to use a XBox controller to guide a virtual ball through the maze. You got the idea ?
