Choosing Electives : Choose Wisely

Hi Year 1 Students, by now you have already been briefed on the course changes that will impact you in AY09. In a nutshell, Michael has explained to you that in Year 2, you will be able to select 4 "Prescribed Electives". What this means is that YOU can choose the modules that you would like to study. Isn't that great ? Yeah !!! Here are Michael's slides for your reference.

Hi Year 2 Students, you have also been briefed by yours truly here that it is time to choose your P5 Elective/Specialisation. Here are my slides for your reference.

As I mentioned to you, seek good counsel and choose wisely.

PS: Here are some briefing photos :)

Young Hearts of Gold

On November 29, 500 senior citizens from 13 different areas over Singapore gathered here in our own campus at the North canteen. This Senior Citizen Party was a joint effort betwen NYP and the Lions Befrienders.

Activites like Bingo game, dancing, singing and lunch were lined up that afternoon to keep the elderly folks entertained. There were volunteers, NYP staff helpers and student volunteers to facilitate the event. It was actually great to see our young ones getting in touch with the senior citizens. Very inspiring and heartwarming.

Project Supervisor: Mr Fauzan

LiMin:
For our project, Yamuna and I will be working closely together to create a website based on the concept of Who Lives Near You online social networking, This new service allows students to interact and get to know their schoolmates better from the different diploma. Here’s how it works. Firstly, users can register for free with their personal student admission number through our Happening@NYP website. Next, they will log in to e-Service to meet other members in their same course of study. From there, others will be able to see which course and specialization you are in.

Users can also customize their personal profiles, search for other members according to interests or hobbies, or chat in a virtual forum with their schoolmates. Apart from that, my project partner, Yamuna, and I will create an e-market garage sales site. This site also allows students to give comments and feedback on the design and the latest fashion trends.

Yamuna:
This is the 3rd third week into my Final Year Project. For the past 2 weeks, I did some research and findings on my project. For next two and the half weeks, Limin and I have to come up with basic applications required in the project. We have done some flash animation that we will be using for later part of the project. As for now, I’m working on the home, login and sign-up pages using ASP.NET. Next week, we will start on the profile page and other features related to the project.

Project Supervisor: Ms Kau

Madeleine:

After twelve weeks of IAP, went back school to continue another twelve weeks of FYP. I was posted to ISG lab at S.446. I am assigned to Ms. Kau. On my 1st day of FYP, I was given a chance to choose what project I want to work on. And I chose to do a project on PHP. During the 1st and 2nd week, did some reading on PHP as well as get familiarized with the tools in Dreamweaver with PHP. In the project room for the ISG group, we have 6 DTs with us. The project room has a bird-cage structure and all the computers are placed round it, thus to know everyone in the room is quite difficult. Everyone is kind of engrossed in their respective projects. But I got to know a few of the students there as they are my friend’s friend. And through them, I’ve made many new friends.

Project Supervisor: Mr David Tang

Qian Yu:
From the 1st week of my FYP until now, I had been doing some research and practicing on creating several web forms according to 2 NYP website using Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition as told by my supervisor, Mr. David Tang. Besides that, I viewed some online tutorial videos which taught me how to use the program, Microsoft SQL Server 2005. I will be using this program to create databases for my project. These online videos are very useful. I am able to learn how to create, manage and connect to SQL Server Express Databases.

Project Supervisor: Mr Gan

Tong Ying:
This is the 3rd week into my FYP. I am currently working on a project for my supervisor, Mr Gan. I have to create a 3D landscape model using Cinema 4D. The landscape must include features like human artifact. I find this project quite interesting as it is part of my interest in doing graphic related stuff. Now I have started to plan on the landscape and doing more research on related topics. Collecting images to modify from and to think of where to place the water features inside the landscape. Hopefully I am able to finish the planning on the landscape and start to create it next week.

Project Supervisor: Mr Banson Wan

Xue Cheng:
When I first time reach ISG lab, rules are being told by the DT, as one of the rule of this lab was to inform any of the DT in the lab our whereabouts. My first thought was that the rules of this lab were strict, but it seems that reality is not what I thought in first place.

Then again the rules are just there to make the environment more suitable for studies. Imagine there are no rules for the lab, students might be coming in late or go off early, as and when they want. The DTs here are all friendly and helpful and they will be helping us when we have any problem, irregardless of miscellaneous stuff like configuration of computer setting or problems we encounter during our project.

Apart from the project supervisor we being assigned, they be the one helping us along till the end of our project. We should be glad that they are willing to fork out some time to guide us in our project. During the first week, I had been looking for information on PHP as my project is using PHP to create a Time allocation timetable. In the second week, I start making my website template layout using Dreamweaver. Starting from this week, I had started some PHP coding with guidance from my supervisor Mr. Benson Wan.

Project Supervisor: Mr Chan

Yi Ling:
The environment in our lab is kind of intense, because everyone seems to be so concentrated on the work they are being assigned to, but in a way, it also acts as a kind of motivation. We've quite a number of DTs in the lab and they're nice and helpful, at least they're not very strict and don't scold us when we do something wrong.

The project I’m assigned to is related to some video streaming whereby I’ve to capture video and upload it to the server and share it with other users. I’m still at the midst of working on it and hopefully I’d finish it successfully.

Project Supervisor: Mr Kwan

Soon Tong:
I’m currently undergoing my FYP in S.446, the lab where they have a makeshift surround sound system (I think) in the center of the lab. It was quite a learning curve when I found out that for my project. I'm suppose to traverse into uncharted territory by learning this coding called ColdFusion so as to create a course management system. The designing of the database is massacring my brain cells too, with more casualties to come when I reach the programming phase. Hope I can make it through this project unscathed.

Time flies. Term break starts next week for 2 weeks and it's time to roll up your sleeves and study hard! In the midst of enjoying the break, those who have to take Common Test after the term break should start planning for revision during this break. A good 2 weeks' break is wonderful to catch up with the workload falling behind and to study for the upcoming common test.

Enjoy the break and the studying. Not forgetting the rest as well.
Good luck on the revision.

BBQ Party for the ISG team on 22 March 08

Some of us might be wondering who are the faces behind the ISG group? Here's some snapshots of the wonderful and enjoyable BBQ party at our boss Michael's place - who had graciously open up his place for us to mess up!

The BBQ was indeed very fun & enjoyable & the food is really yummy!!! To name a few - there are satays, prawns, salmon, sting ray, sotong, garlic bread, lamb, beef, corn, salads, fruits, desserts, chocolates, wine, beer … oops. Pease don't drool! =P

Though there was a super heavy downpour that afternoon, the weather was really nice and cooling after that, hence making it perfect environment to have hot BBQ food on a cold wet weather. Of course, not without the flying cockroaches and mosquitoes attacking us but this did not hamper our moods to enjoy ourselves at the BBQ.

First presenting ...... the self sacrificing Cooks!!! willing to stand behind the fire and charcol and consuming the smoke just to barbeque wonderful cooked food for us.
Skillful & highly professional. No burnt marks at all! Full marks for you guys! 10/10 =)

Chefs hard at work.

We are manning the food station :)

Everyone was practicing “Prawning”. The prawns were really really huge, juicy and fresh!!! We were snatching over them! Literally.
*cheers to Benson & Fauzan*

Poor Lin Chong (in orange) can only see us savour the juicy big prawns cos he's having a fever. Who says no prawns allowed if you are having a fever? But well, his portion was quickly shared. Make a guess who was that? Hint : Obviously peeling the prawn .... = )

The professional cooks! Michael & Ricky

Food tastes as good as it looks in the picture.

Here's the team and see how happy and well fed we are.

It's definitely a successful BBQ as we've had loads of fun!!! It was a different environment for a change where the staff and DTs have more communication out of the normal serious environment. We cooked alot, chitchat alot, ate alot, laugh alot, joke alot ... Yes, we're a fun bunch of people though we may look quite serious but remember never to judge a book by its cover.

Feedback : Boss, when is our next BBQ?
