NYP Chinese Orchestra Video !

All of you have probably heard about the Gold award that our Chinese Orchestra has clinched in the 18th Australian International Music Festival. Now, OLT is proud to bring you their superb performance ... Enjoy !

Video contributed by Jacqueline Leow and edited by Francois Polo

OLT Advice : For optimum enjoyment, wait a while for video to load before playing it. Audio can also be quite loud, hence, tune for desired sound level.

OLT Comment : There are 3 musical pieces that were performed in the competition. We extracted out the last piece entitled "龙腾虎跃".

LKY STEP Award

Hi Guys, I am Ziwei, from NYP, Dip in Multimedia Infocomm Technology, Year 1, E7.

A little bit of my background, I am someone who hopped from one job to another after my GCE 'O' Level in 1999. However, encouraged by my National Service friends who are ITE graduates, I decided to join ITE.

In ITE, I was given many opportunities to develop not only my technical skills, but myself in many ways. As the president of the Student Council Central (MacPherson Campus), I represented ITE in dialogue sessions including those with Minister of Education, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, and Minister of State(Education), Mr Gan Kim Yong.

Apart from these I also participated in Youth Exchange programmes in Singapore Malaysia Youth Camp held in Pahang. I also represented ITE to go for Indonesia leadership training camp. I also went Vietnam for 1 month to study for CCNA Intro Examination, in their local computer school VSIC.

On top of all these I am also involved in community service programmes for the elderly poor in Singapore. I also went over to Yunnan/China to help needy villages there for 18 days.

In spite of these involvements, I stayed true to my goal. I had a perfect GPA 4.0. It takes a lot of determination and focus to achieve this.

But I must say ITE has transformed my life forever and allowed me a second chance in my life to get back into Singapore educational stream.

I am thankful and glad that ITE and Poly gave me this LKY STEP AWARD (Scholarship To Encourage Upgrading) to aid me in carrying on my studies in POLY.

I must say this, what you had achieved will not determine what you are going to get in your future. It is the determination, focus, hard work and attitude that you put in that will enable you to achieve what you will be getting. Now in NYP, my heart and soul goes fully into achieving good results for my modules.

Though life in Poly and ITE is not the same, still the basic principle of studying still applies. NYP definitely taught me in my first semester how to go about studying for my exams, how to listen to important points from the lecture and how to do my practical to the expectation of my lecturers

Lastly, thank you once again ITE and Poly for the award. My goal will not just stop here, and I urge all students like me to join me in achieving your own personal goals. I am sure through our course, with hard work and determination, our goals could be met.

First Week @ Walt Disney

When I heard that I was going to Walt Disney for my attachment, I had lots of mixed feelings. I was happy because it was a rare chance and it was Walt Disney, I didn’t even know they that had an office here in Singapore. But I was also very worried and nervous because I was afraid I couldn’t cope with work over there. My supervisor called me and had this small little interview over the phone.

The first day, I arrived at the office feeling kind of lost, I reported and they brought me around the whole of the office. It had 2 levels and 4 offices, very huge! The environment at the offices was also very nice. Walt Disney soft toys, figures, decorations were like everywhere! I was then brought to my own workspace, give my own desktop, my own account, and my own @disney.com email account. I was really happy! Then they started teaching me stuff that I am supposed to do. They were all very patient and nice to me. It made me feel much comfortable and less nervous. They even brought me out to have lunch together with them. After hearing all the stories from the rest of my friends, I really felt very lucky to be attached to Walt Disney because not only the environment is nice, the people are also very nice plus I can apply my knowledge that I’ve learnt in school. I have to deploy Disney mobile games to different handsets that are available in the office, and slowly test out every features of it to look for bugs. If a bug is spotted, I will then have to write a bug report. Not only that, I have to do compatibility testing to see which phones can be grouped together. I have to study the different models and know their specifications very well. When the boss was back from her holidays, she even brought us to the Games Convention Asia 2007, and I joined in their weekly meetings.

As the days go by, it got really tiring to come to work. Waking up early and sleeping early has become a must for me. I’m still not used to the long working hours so I’m always yawning in the office. I can’t wait to learn more new stuff from them. I’m also coping very well. I love my attachment at Walt Disney! =)

FYP@S.435 - May to Aug 07

One for the memories - a shot of the 8 of them. (from left: JianRen, Priscilla, Jasline, HuiLian, SeokHwa, HongChuan, Azhar, YiRen).

Let's see what they have to say for their FYP in S435.

Azhar :

FYP has benefited me in some ways. It encourages me to search for solutions to problems in more than one way. When the problem persists, I would have to look at it in from another perspective. There was no direct guide to accomplishing my objective and thus it allowed me to be more dynamic in my learning experience. My supervisor has also been very helpful in explaining to me the concept for my project and hence I am able to achieve my project objectives.

Jian Ren :

My project incorporating Second Life is really an interesting mixed reality project to do. Though it lasted for 3 months, which is neither long nor short, I've learn quite a lot. My project supervisor is kind enough to help me too.

Jasline :

I am quite happy as I met new friends while doing my project. I learn lots of new things from my labmates and partner. I enjoyed the days we are doing project together with joy and laughter. I am doing my project using flash, actionscript and although these stuffs are really giving me lots of headaches but I must say I really enjoy it.

Julian :

Life @FYP can be fun in one way or another, like meeting your ex-classmates for lunch and dinner after school. It's not just about doing projects, but also to have FUN! It may be the best time to broaden up your social network by knowing people from other labs. They will help you pass your FYP times as well as the stress =)

Priscilla:

FYP has been eventful as we are working with people we do not know so we have to learn to communicate with others. And also we had to learn something totally new which is stressful. But still we managed to pull through it all.

Well, all good things must come to an end, OLT congratulations to the 8 of them on completion of their FYP and advancing back to studies for another semester before they graduate from NYP. :)

National Day Celebration @ South

A yearly event that we are all waiting for, the NATION's BIRTHDAY!!! Where we can have a day of celebration as well as having the opportunities to watch the beautiful fireworks at Marina Bay and performance on our very own Floating Plaform @ Marina Bay on 9th August.

In NYP, we had our own small celebration in south canteen on 7th August from 10am to 4pm.

There were dedication of songs, performance by various clubs and fun games to join in.

I'm sure most of you enjoyed the music played across the canteen during your breaks as much as I do,especially the 3 songs sang "LIVE" in 3 different languages by the two talents below.

- Qing Fei De Yi in Malay
- Miss You Like Crazy in English
- Baby I'm Sorry in Chinese
*Encore Song - When you say nothing at all

More pictures here.

Last but not least,

HAPPY 42nd BIRTHDAY SINGAPORE!!!~

Doing Projects in Beijing, China

Life @ BITC - From strangers to good friends.

Arriving on 27 May 2007, Departing on 20 July 2007.

Dragging our feet to lab every morning, just to make sure that we complete whatever we have to do for the day and then enjoy ourselves after lab time by doing some group exercises such badminton, basketball and soccer. Time to work out!!

Miss those times when we go out to explore Beijing as one whole group and enjoying those places of attractions over there. Settling our meals at various eateries and at times complaining about the standard of their service as well as the quality of the foods.

Oops =X

On the very last day, I guess most of us can’t bear to leave each other; after all, it is a bond of two quality months together. Leaving our comfortable home, to somewhere where we have to rely on ourselves and one another.
