TKK Young Inventors’ Award

The TKK Young Inventors’ Award is an open competition to stimulate innovation among the young generation and to promote scientific and technological research in Singapore. 2 of our very own DMIT students, Jean Tan Zhiye and Lee Di Sheng participated and were awarded the Silver Medal under the Senior Student Section. With the guidance of their mentor Mr. Boo Soo Heng and their hard work, they came up with an android-powered mobile app called mPresenter that helps a person makes an impactful presentation.

Our congratulations to our students (actually already alumni :)) and mentor Mr. Boo Soo Heng on receiving the Silver Medal for the TKK Young Inventors’ Award. Btw, Silver is the highest award given in this year's competition.

Congratulations!! We are proud of you both. :)

Zhong Hua Secondary School Infocomm Club Visits DMIT

As part of their Infocomm Camp, Zhonghua Secondary School students visited SEG(E) to learn more about Infocomm and what the DMIT diploma has to offer. They were given a brief introduction of the school, the Infocomm industry, and also what DMIT diploma is about and what it has to offer.

The students were then given a tour of the facilities in the school, as well as demonstrations of some interesting systems. Here's one of the video we took while they were trying out the Kinect-enabled systems =)

Everyone had a fun time learning Infocomm and we took a group photo too!

National Crime Prevention Council Festive Season RoadShow 2010

On 6th November, our students and staffs went down to support the National Crime Prevention Council Festive Season RoadShow 2010 @ Plaza Singapura. DMIT final year students had helped to create informational and games applications using interactive gestures for the event. Then Minister for Information, Communications & the Arts, Mr. Lui Tuck Yew kick start the event. After the launch ceremony, he went around to view the exhibits and stop by our booth where our student, Deon explained the various applications to him.

OLT catches up with the students, staffs and event organizers involved on their thoughts after the event.

In view of the National Crime Prevention Council event, I feel that the various application designed by us are well received. People of all ages including Minister Lui, enjoyed our interactive application.

In this crime prevention event, we have received a lot of positive feedback from the public and even from Minister Lui Tuck Yew. He has praised NYP students for the work at the event. Other positive comments from the young people at the event were received too.

We would like to congratulate both Colin and Jun Yao for being awarded the NYP scholarship. Both have definitely done well to deserve this scholarship. OLT catches up with Colin on his thoughts on being awarded the scholarship.

I would first like to say a big “Thank You” to the school - thank you for the caring lecturers and mentors, for the quality education and the good facilities. I’m extremely grateful to receive the NYP scholarship. Across the past 2 years, it’s been an amazing journey for me – actively participating in competitions and accomplishing some extent of success in some; starting up a club, excelling in studies and fostering meaningful friendships with my peers. I’m thankful for the scholarship as it will help me financially and better focus on achieving the goals and championing the ‘innovative’ spirit of NYP. Thank you NYP!

Low Crime Doesn't Mean No Crime - National Crime Prevention Council Festive Season RoadShow 2010, 6-7 Nov @ Plaza Singapura.

National Crime Prevention Council Annual Festive Season Campaign which spans from November to February is a signature program of the NCPC. It aims to remind the public to be vigilant while they go about shopping and celebrating amidst festivities. This year’s campaign tagline will once again be, “Low Crime Doesn’t Mean No Crime”, with the secondary message of “Don’t hide from the Fact…Be Alert”.

Staff and students from DMIT are supporting the carnival with fun-filled activities at Plaza Singapura, Atrium@Orchard on 6-7 Nov 2010.

The launch ceremony will be graced by Mr Lui Tuck Yew, Minister for Information, Communications & the Arts. There will also be an exhibition put up by NCPC’s partners to engage participants in Crime Prevention awareness.

National Poly Forum

OLT catches up with Li Jwee on his experiences at the National Poly Forum.
National Poly Forum has been an eye opening experience. I was exposed to the various social and economical affairs that we Singaporean are concerned about and the various challenges that we may face 20 years down the road.
Having speakers from various fields sharing their viewpoints has shed light upon certain issues that allow me to view events from a different perspective. For example, in the past I wasn’t able to comprehend the actions of the government to extend the withdrawal of CPF fund to a later age with the requirement to top up the existing amount they have. After going through the forum, I’m gradually able to understand the rationale behind these decision made by the Singapore Government.
The poly forum has served as a platform where young people from the various polys come together to share their ideas for a better future. Not only has it allowed us to voice our opinions but also helped us to forge a greater sense of ownership in Singapore.
I am most impressed by the facilitators from the various polytechnics. They were both knowledgeable and engaging. They have inspired most of us, allowing us to think deeper into the various issues rather than just dictating what needs to be done.
Apart from the forum’s activities, the bonds forged during the entire forum was most memorable! The chance to interact with people and students from various backgrounds has broadened my horizon. There was much stuff I can learn from these great people! Even with the end of the polytechnic forum, we are still pretty much in contact with everyone. To sum it up, the lessons I have learned from this forum is not to be complacent and that we should always seek for improvements to stay relevant. I feel that all students should have such a chance to attend events like this. The overall experience for this forum for me was FANTASTIC!

Tote Board Website Design Competition Win

Our heartiest congratulations to Wendy Ng Yen Peng, Jessica Ng Wen Xian and Lim Jun Yao from DMIT for winning the 4th prize (Consolation Prize) in the competition in January this year. The Tote Board has recently developed and launched a new website design - using a fusion of all competition teams' concepts and ideas.

During the competition prize presentation ceremony, Mr Tan Soo Nan, Chief Executive of Tote Board congratulated our students, who "showed distinct talent in their professional approach to the competition". Mr Tan also praised the competition teams for a job “well done”and echoed the judges’ verdict on the overall high standards in design quality and innovative appeal. For their fine performance, the team walked away with a cash prize of $500.

Reflections from the Tertiary Tech Conference 2010

We caught up with Mitchell, Kelvin and Weiming after their participation in the Tertiary Tech Conference 2010, and they shared with us some of their post-event reflections.

Mitchell Yogen

"It was a great experience showcasing my game to the visitors. There were a few visitors interested in my game and came up enquiring about it during the lunch time demo.

My presentation in Room 2 went well as many were listening and interested in what I had to say. I had feedbacks at the end of the presentation by some of the visitors telling and complementing me for what I have created. It was nice hearing those feedbacks.

The good part about my presentation was when I introduced my project and the design aspect of it. Not forgetting the demo of the game also. I could have improved my presentation by showing them my software development kit UI for them to have a look at how it was and how I went about creating my project. Otherwise, I was satisfied with what I have done.

In conclusion, it has been a great time spend and meeting other creaters of applications and games. I have also understood that everyone has their own troubles creating their games and apps. While some were very new concepts, they were also very interesting. I am proud to be a creator of my game amidst other competitors."

Kelvin and Weiming

"Kelvin and I presented our Final Year Project in 2010’s Tertiary Tech Conference at SMU. As one of the only two presenting teams from a Polytechnic, we were really nervous and at the same time grateful for such an opportunity.

Each presenting team was given a round lounge table facilitated with power extentions, located outside the presentation rooms. The SMU staff were really helpful and pleasant. We demonstrated our game to the curious people while they held on to their lunch. It was a casual interaction with students from other institutions, representatives from companies and lecturers. Unfortunately, we were too engrossed in showcasing our work to others, such that we(Including Mitch) forgotten to take our lunch.

As our presentation slot was right after the lunch break, the SMU committee had a difficult time recalling the audience back to the presentation room. However, we still presented to a sizable audience. We enjoyed presenting our project to them, as it was more of a sharing session of our development process. Overall, we were glad that there were no technical faults or hiccups. Mr Edmund Teo, being apart of the audience, made us more comfortable in front of the projector screens.

I believe the area where we had did well in, will have to be our commitment. It was only through our commitment and interest, we were able to take some time off to prepare for our presentations and express our seriousness in our work. Instead of having the “Do and go back home” attitude, we rather follow the “Put our best in what we do” mantra. It was only then, we could achieve and benefit from the experience.

As for areas of improvement, we should have the initiative to produce namecards before attending the conference. There was a number of occasions where people enquired for our name cards. We are still students, who would have thought of that? =] However, I believe it will be a good practice to design and personalise our very own namecards, so as to leave a deeper impression to the people we met. Our presentation can still be vastly improved, as I believe we lack the natural expressions we have seen from other presenters. We have to add more ammunitions to our vocabulary. We have to develop our confidence further.

I’ve recently been awarded the National Infocomm Scholarship (NIS) with IDA and BT Frontline, feeling both happy for myself and grateful to DMIT. I’m going to share with you my experience and process of getting the NIS. As mentioned somewhere in this blog, it’s awarded to keen learners and wanting-to-succeed performers, a chance to work with leading Infocomm companies and MNCs like Microsoft, Oracle, Barclays Capital, BT Frontline and 23 others. I had three fruitful years in DMIT, with my caring lecturers to thank for my outstanding academic results. I was given the chance to represent NYP and Singapore in the biennial Worldskills Competition. I also had my overseas industrial attachment with Cisco Systems (USA), which is available to each and every one of you. So why wait? There’s a lot more opportunities and challenges for fellow DMIT-ians to explore and take up!

Going on to share with you my experiences on getting the NIS. On the day of the scholarship interview, apart from the formal wear and my thick portfolio, there are other things that need preparation. You will have to understand what the company is doing, their visions and their directions. Be prepared that they will ask you tricky questions that you may never have thought of before. For example, “Which kind of boss you will like to work for, the employee benefits driven one, or the goal driven one?” Do not bother about telling them what are already stated in your resume because most likely, they would have already have read through them. You got to prove to the interviewers why you are the right one, how you can contribute to the company and vice versa, your keen interest in a career with them and also why you have chosen this path, to be an Infocomm professional. I came across this description of an interview somewhere and hope it might be useful for you.

“The fact that you were called up for interview is because, on paper, it shows that you are different from the other applicants and it’s worth their time to interview you and get to know you more. Now is the time for you to show your interviewers that their filtering system hasn’t gone wrong and you are the right one for them."

Before I end off, just want to urge all fellow DMIT-ians to look for opportunities that can make you the brightest star in the sky. Believe in yourself that you can be one!

From France to Singapore

We managed to sneak in a quick interview with two of our french attachment students, Sampath and Frederic, who were doing their project with us from May to end July 2010. Want to know what are their opinions of Singapore, NYP and their project? Read on!

OLT: So, why did both of you decided to do your project in Singapore/NYP?
Fred : I wanted to have an international learning experience.
Sam : Yes, I wanted a international experience and also discover more about the asian culture.

OLT: What was your project about?
Fred & Sam : We were developing a wearable computing application for the elderly, which comes with features such as falling detection, temperature detection, and emergency button through Wi-Fi transmission and potentially also via 3G networks.

OLT: What are some of the things you have picked up or learnt here?
Fred : We developed a web site, installed web server and picked up a new kind of language for arduino.
Sam : We discover the Arduino and Lilypad technology, as well as networking and techniques in debugging.

OLT: How do you find the students and teachers?
Fred : The students are friendly and kind. However, I did not have a lot of contact with other teachers, except our supervisor who was really nice!
Sam : The students are kind, but a little bit too shy, so they didn't really talk to us a lot. Same thoughts as Fred for the teachers.

OLT: Did you visit Singapore's interesting places and the surrounds?
Fred : Yes, during the week-ends we travelled a lot. I went to Thailand and Malaysia and a lot of places in Singapore(the Zoo, East Coast, Pulau Ubin... the list goes on).
Sam : Oh yes. I went to Tioman in Malaysia which was really nice, and traveled also a lot in Singapore during the week-ends.

OLT: Overall, how do you find your Singapore student exchange experience and would you recommend other ESIEE to come here too?
Fred : It was a very good experience because I met a lot different people coming of different countries around the world. And I also really like the city of Singapore and the Asian lifestyle. Yes of course I will recommend for all the ESIEE students to come here at NYP.
Sam : It was a really interesting experience. We learned a lot of things, technically and culturally. We had the chance to travel a bit and meet a lot of people. I will definitely recommend this to the other ESIEE students.

Training at YOG 2010 for IT Helpdesk Call Agent Officer

Hi, we are MIT(Multimedia and Infocomm) Year 2 students and we were selected to be volenteers for YOG(Youth Olympic Games) to be a IT Helpdesk Call Agent Officer. We are Abhradeep Banerjee(Left), Loh Yong Liang(Center) and Randy Kwek(Right). Our training was the YOG headquarters at redhill. Our training started at 26th June at 9am.

I had joined the first YOG as volunteer because it's a good opportunity to take advantage of. I switched from being a Logistic Support Officer to being a IT desktop Call Agent. This will actually add to my current resume. As I would have found it a bit more interesting. We were told at the end of the training if we wanted we could go for a IT desktop Support position which I find it will be very useful to have an exposure in it. There aren't much opportunities given especially when your working as a volunteer at the Youth Olympic games. I had already done some IT desktop support as I had already learned some of it during my MIT course. "commented by Abhradeep Banerjee"

I had joined YOG as a volunteer because I wanted to get involved in first ever YOG and experience it. During the training, i was new to the skills they were teaching. I did not understand at first, and slowly I started to understood it and somehow managed to get the hang of it. As this is the first YOG held in Singapore, I am very excited and eager to learn new stuff by volunteering as a IT help desk agent. With this opportunity, i am able to assist the engineers in solving related IT problems. Our Job scope is basically to receive phone calls from users who are experiencing problem with the computers or laptop. We are to enter the information such as the problem and who is experiencing it. Next we are to print out a receipt for the IT desktop support personnel who will come and collect the receipt. When he's done fixing the problem we will update on the database where we'll indicated on how he/she had solved the problem.

We felt that the training was very interesting as we never had done anything like this before. We also got to know that during the actual job we would actually learn new skills for example how to fix various problems,etc. I hope in the future we would all get more opportunities like this. We like to thank Mr Edmund Teo and Ms Jessie Goh for this wonderful opportunity

YOG Environment Challenge Game featured at NEA Event

The "Singapore 2010 Environment Challenge" Facebook game, a NYP/SEG(E)- SYOGOC collaboration project, was featured during the "Official Launch of the New Anti-Littering Campaign", by National Environment Agency (NEA) on 6 June 2010 at Plaza Singapura.

Students from DMIT were there to support the event and explain the game to the Guest-of-Honour, Dr Yaacob Ibrahim, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, other VIPs and the members of the public.

This game enables players to grow fruit-bearing trees by supplying “nutrients” such as Water, Sun and Fertilizer. To earn these nutrients, players have to answer environmental related questions correctly to earn them.

By applying knowledge acquired throughout the 3 years of studies in DMIT and sheer hard work, the several batches of students involved in the game development have emerged successful in their efforts.

Encouragement from mentors have really boosted students’ moral and played a significant part of their success in many ways. Although some hiccups were encountered, guidance and encouragement helped to improve the game to what it is now.

“We have learned designing, animation in DMIT in the first two years. This helped us to create this game”, commented one of the student. He added, “As an innovative polytechnic, we are also asked to explore our own limits with knowledge being acquired outside our field of study. For example, we had to learn the less familiar FaceBook Markup Language or FBML.”

“It has been a daunting task yet an interesting one for all of us. We learnt something new in the process. In conclusion, it has been a great experience and knowledge gained. I can also say it has been a great start for something new."

Going into 2010 is certainly a milestone. Imagine, passing the 1st Decade of the 21st Century. For us in MIT, it means soon to be saying hello to a new batch of students and giving our best wishes to our graduating final year students as they go on to 'Shape the Digital Future'.

Goodbye 2009 and Hello 2010

It's time of the year whereby we gather with our family and friends to catch up with one another, spend the festive holidays together and for some, it might just be going for good year-end sales, taking a good holiday abroad.

December 31 marks the end of the year and we are probably thinking about how we are going to celebrate the night, what we are having for dinner, who we are going to meet and where to catch the best view of the fireworks with our latest DSLR or where to get the best iPhone deal.

So what does the last day of the year mean to you? Perhaps it's a time to reflect on what had been done for this year, what have you achieved this year, what nice/not nice things you did? Not just academically but the mental and emotional aspect too.

Anything that you need to make amend before the year ends? Just like the usual Chinese New Year's saying goes "Do not owe $$ before the Chinese New Year starts else it's bad luck".

Is there anything that you want to settle before the year ends? Anyone you want to say 'Thank You' or 'Sorry' to?

If you had not done so, it's a good time and opportunity to close the chapter and move on. Of course, one should not drag till end of the year to settle such issues - but if you had not done so, it's a great opportunity to reflect and act on it.

It is also a time to COUNT OUR BLESSINGS. It might be a good or not too good year but there are always good things to count on. Look at the year and set resolutions for the new year so that at the end of 2010, you can look back and see how you have "grown".

So to 2009, we'll say Goodbye and to 2010, a warm Hello. May your dreams come true in 2010 as you set yourself thinking and acting on it cos dreams don't just happen overnight. The hard work you put in, you'll receive your due rewards.

National Youth Achievement Award (NYAA)

NYAA is an exciting personal challenge to young people between the ages of 14 and 25. It is a balanced programme of activities designed to equip youth with personal qualities and skills to make a difference to themselves, their communities and their world.

Three of our MIT graduates, Eugene Tay, Kenken Lim & Elynn Pang were awarded the National Youth Achievement Gold Award (NYAA) on 2 Oct at the 9th NYAA Gold Award Ceremony 2009, which was graced by His Excellency President SR Nathan.

When asked for his feelings on achieving NYAA Gold Award, Eugene replied, "I'm pretty proud to have attained the NYAA award because I have challenged myself so much in this program and finally managed to complete it. It is definitely an honour to be able to receive the award from President S R Nathan. Completing the NYAA Program is a milestone in my life and the journey will definitely not end here. I am now a member of the NYAA Gold Award Holders’ Alumni (GAHA) and I hope that I will continue to be able to serve the community in many ways. It has been a memorable experience for me and the lessons I learned have been invaluable."

And how did he sum up the 3 years that he had with MIT @ NYP? "All in all, my 3 years in MIT and NYP have indeed been very fruitful from all angles. I built good and lasting friendships which I will treasure throughout the rest of my life."

As for Kenken, who took up the challenge to build her leadership qualities. She has discovered many more valuable skills in the process and has experienced much since. To her, she has now become more confident, mature in handling problems and crafting solutions for difficult situations. She is now much more aware of her strengths and weakness, hence, allowing her to work on her weakness to improve it. She added "This is not the end of the award, but the beginning of a lifelong learning process."

Trip to Dalian, China

OLT caught up with a few of our students who visited Dalian, China in September this year. During this trip, the students have the opportunity to visit Hewlett‐Packard (HP) in Dalian and gained an in‐depth understanding of its operations and the IT service industry in China as a whole. A visit to Neusoft, a HP partner and global IT solutions provider, was also an eye‐opener into the advance technologies of the Chinese enterprise. The students gained first‐hand experience of Neusoft, it’s growth from a company with a humble beginning to a leading organization that develops advance navigation systems for the automotive industry, intelligent software for mobile devices from Sony and Apple iPhone, and state‐of‐the‐art medical engineering products for Philips Electronics.

Besides the industry and university visits, the group also spent some time visiting places of interest in Dalian, such as museums, art centre and theme parks, to better appreciate the history and culture and lifestyle of Dalian and China.

In Memory : Yew Ding Sheng

Our dear alumni, Ding Sheng, who graduated in 2007 passed away on 22 Oct 2009 due to an illness. Though Ding Sheng was wheelchair bound throughout his 3-year of study due to muscular dystrophy; however, he was courageous and determined in completing it. After graduation, he had worked as a freelance programmer at home.

We will remember you, Ding Sheng.

Handling Friendships

There are 2 parts to this conflict management clip - the negative and positive "version". Packaged in a "news flash" style hosted by Chersy, it describes 3 scenarios between a "blur" Serene, her "new and innocent" friend Elene and the "schizophrenic" Liling. Liling transformed from the super negative to the super positive friend in this clip. I must say that these folks put up quite an entertaining clip with touches of Singlish and "almost forget script" moments. So what's the takeaway? Well, the clip reminds us that with the right words and attitude, we can co-create a different and positive outcome with those we interact with - our friends and loved ones.

Majority Rule?

Majority Rules! In this clip, Chee Kit had this "unique" idea but it was rejected. So, he is obviously not happy. A hair pulling and punching scene ensued, with a majority rule outcome. Employing time freeze, slow motion actions and fast-forward speech, coupled with a dash of exaggerated speech and slanging, this short funny clip probably would bring on a couple of smiles or giggles from its viewer. Done by Grace, Cheekit, Jacque & Sally. Now, what if Chee Kit's idea was indeed better, but was overruled by the majority? *Ponder*

The Life of Benjamin

This story revolves around this character Benjamin and the fairy Godmother travelling back through time to see how his terrible and cocky attitude has caused him to lose his wife, job and even his friends. And what's the solution for this impenitent brat? A TIGHT SLAP from the fairy Godmother! That somehow did the trick and Benjamin recovered all that he lost and is once again a happy man. Hey, what's a "red bull beer" that Benjamin ordered during the drinking scene in the clip?? Lolz.. Enjoy.

The Muru Teamwork Magic

Muru is a talented but self-centered and proud player in his soccer team. As a result, his team missed many scoring opportunities because of his 'solo play' attitude. The conflict escalated into a tussle in the dressing room. As the story developed, Muru came to realise the value of teamwork, and became a firm believer of "working as a team". Hear the high-pitch whine in the ear pulling scene and the drumbeat-drenched kungfu sequence before the final game starts. :)

Alumni Nite - 1 to Remember

On the evening of 21st August 2009, we had a homecoming event for MIT alumni. The event saw 48 of its alumni, hailing from every graduating year since 2002, coming back to NYP to meet and catch up with friends, classmates and their lecturers. Alumni that we spoke to were appreciative of the opportunity to come back to their alma mater to rekindle friendships and the location of the event at the terrace on Block S Level 4, certainly brings back nostalgia for some. There were indeed many moments of joyous recognition of alumnae and their lecturers. Two of our talented students (Azizi & Nazri) also provided entertainment through their guitar & vocal performance. Thank you guys !

Special thanks also goes to Howie Chang (2003) for sharing on his experiences after graduation and Wen Bin (2009) for sharing on his experiences during Imagine Cup 2009 at Egypt.

Everyone had so much catching up to do that the last batch of alumni/staff left close to 11pm and that was only due to the need to keep the chairs/tables. All in all, everyone had a most enjoyable evening.

Winning at Code::XtremeApps:: 2009

Congratulations to our students and mentor Mr Jimmy Ang, the Dream Machine, on winning the Code::XtremeApps:: 2009 !!!

Some background on the competitions ... Competitors in this competition had to build an innovative and useful application within 24 hours. For this year's competition, participants came up with an innovative way to educate the public about the benefits of healthy living and the harmful effects of smoking. Some 119 teams took part in this competition and 17 teams were selected for final judging on 17 July 2009. AND ours came in FIRST :)

Said Colin Pang, team leader of winning team ‘Dream Machine’, “What I’ve learnt most about this competition is the importance of perseverance: you never know just how much you can achieve within 24 hours, and the results will amaze you.”

The team came up with a suite of healthcare programmes for mobile phones based on the Google Android platform. They worked non-stop for 24 hours, and kept awake with a diet of Red Bulldrinks, sweets and biscuits. Some machines they are !!!

Team PlanetKY of Singapore won the 2nd place worldwide in the Microsoft Imagine Cup 2009 competition, MashUp category!

I would like to say a big big THANK YOU to all of you whom have been continuously supporting us, helped us invite your friends, and also for believing in us! ;) We wil never achieve where we are without the help from all of you!

Hello People, how is the study week been going for you from home ? We hope you are keeping yourself free from the bugs that are going around and mugging at home for next week common test instead :):):) In the meantime, we are sure lot of emails, msn and sms are flying around between you and your lecturers, hope you are not swarm with them and you do not swarm your lecturers as well .. haha.

Next week is common test week and if you are still not aware of the schedule, the schedule is in "myNYP Portal" as well as the iConnect website :)

By the way, go and get your Temperature Sticker 1st thing when you come into campus, else you will NOT be allowed to take your test.

Now its onto the last stage of this semester, and its time for FYP students to "changeover" with our friends on attachment. Time to really get into the working world and apply all that we have learnt in the duration of this course. Good luck everyone, and may it all go well.
